Hue

Hue is the capital city of Thua Thien - Hue province, situated in central Vietnam, about 700km from Hanoi to the South and about 1100 km from Ho Chi Minh City to the North. During the rule of Nguyen – the last feudal dynasty, from 1802 until 1945, Hue was the capital of the country. The city is well known for its monuments, architecture as well as beautiful natural landscape.

Straddling the Perfume River with the Royal Citadel mirrors itself into the calm water surface and Trang Tien Bridge like a rainbow spanning the River banks, the image of Hue reflects in many beautiful poems and songs and is called the city of love.

Constructed during the early 19th century, the Hue Citadel was the symbol of Royal power with high mossy brick walls running more than 10km perimeter held the Forbidden City, the living area of Emperors and their family. Here, more than elsewhere in the country, vestiges of the past and traditional values are obvious anywhere with royal buildings, pagodas, monuments, and so on still exist though many of them have been ruined by the past wars.

On the southern bank of the river is the French quarter with trees line boulevards and French-style buildings. It is the base for tourists with lots of hotels, restaurants, and bars and is the most convenient place to wander around.

Few kilometers to the west of the city on the hilly area are Royal mausoleums built for diseased Emperors. All of them, big or small, are impressive with architectural style and natural scenery.

Hue is a major center of Buddhism of Viet Nam, therefore, there are dozen over 300-year-old pagodas and hundreds of temples and pagodas that were constructed about a century. Hue is also home to the unique royal music and the land of distinctive traditional crafts such as bronze casting, conical hat knitting…together with the delicious cuisine.  Every visitor who has ever been to Hue can hardly miss such tasty dishes as Bun Bo Hue, Mussel rice…

During the Vietnam War, the city was seriously damaged, especially the Royal Citadel and its buildings. After the war, many of the historic features of Hue were neglected because they were seen as the vestige of feudalism and reactionary until the early 1990s when the government suddenly realized its cultural and tourism values. Hue was recognized by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage in Vietnam in 1993 and many historical areas of the city are currently being restored.
