Thailand Songkran Water Festival 2024

03 April 2024

The Songkran Water Festival 2024 is set to take place from April 12th to April 16th at 20 renowned tourist places across Thailand.

Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year festival, celebrated annually in Thailand and several other Southeast Asian countries. It usually falls on April 13th-15th, though the duration of the festival can vary in different regions. Songkran is renowned for its water festival aspect, where people engage in water fights and splashing water on one another as a symbol of cleansing and washing away the past year's misfortunes, as well as bringing in good luck for the upcoming year. In addition to the water festival, Songkran is a time for family reunions, making merit at temples, paying respects to elders, and participating in various cultural and religious activities. It's one of the most significant and joyous celebrations in Thailand, attracting both locals and tourists alike.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced the schedule and locations for the Songkran festival in 20 provinces and cities, and famous tourist places in Thailand in April, aiming to provide information for travelers planning trips during this period.

Songkran marks the Thai New Year, a time to honor family values, show respect for elders, and observe traditional rituals at temples nationwide. During this occasion, people engage in water splashing to symbolize good luck. While the festival is celebrated throughout the country, Bangkok particularly hosts vibrant festivities, having previously set a Guinness World Record for the "World's Largest Water Gun Fight" in 2011, with nearly 3,500 participants engaging in a water gun battle for 10 minutes.

In 2024, Songkran officially extends for 4 days, from April 12th to April 16th. However, festivities in various provinces often start earlier and conclude later, extending from April 4th to April 20th.
