The best time for trekking in Mu Cang Chai

Located around 280 km from Hanoi and lying at the foot of Hoang Lien Son mountain range, Mu Cang Chai is a remote highland district of Yen Bai province. Mu Cang Chai has two main seasons including the hot and cold seasons. The cold season lasts from November to March of the following year with the average temperature below 20 Celsius degrees. Sometimes, it drops to zero and ices appear. The weather of the area in the beginning and by the end of the cold season is usually drizzled. The hot season from April to October is humid with an average temperature of around 25 Celsius degrees. The hot season is also the rainy season and the average rainfall is from 1,500 to 2,200 mm/year and sometimes accompanied by floods.

During the season of pouring water in May and June, the summer rains begin to fall down the mountains which later is led into the rice fields. This is also the time when locals start to cultivate the fields to be ready for a new crop. Mu Cang Chai seems wearing a new shirt full of gentle rustic colors. The watery terraces in the afternoon sunshine reflecting blue sky, white clouds, and spectacular ranges of mountain create a magnificent beauty that impresses many visitors traveling here. The one-month period lasting from mid-September to mid-October is the ripe rice season with bright colors and nice weather. In the late autumn, Mu Cang Chai valley is covered with the fresh fragrance of new rice, magical yellow terraces, and the happy faces of farmers in colorful traditional ethnic costumes when participating in the harvest festival.
