Thailand: From 2022, foreign tourists visiting Thailand will have to pay a visiting fee of 500 Bath per person (about US$ 15).
This new regulation is approved by The Centre for Economic Situation Administration of Thailand (CESA) in early October 2021. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimates a collection of THB 5 billion (around US$ 150 million), assuming that there are 10 million foreign tourists visiting Thailand in 2022.
The fee is to help improving sustainable tourism - scene of Bangkok
The money from this collection will be transferred to the “Tourism Conversion Fund” that is used to promote sustainable tourism in Thailand, creating safer and cleaner destinations in the country, supporting sustainable tourism projects as well as providing additional insurance benefits for travelers.
However, the exact time for this new regulation to be applied has not yet been announced.
The fee collection is believed to generate a fund of several million dollars each year to support sustainable tourism
The fee was THB 300 when the creation of this fun was put on the agenda earlier this year. Yuthasak Supasorn, General Director of the National Administration of Tourism of Thailand said that this increasing 200 baht would be channeled into projects that transform the operational model from mass tourism to more advanced, sustainable tourism that protects the environment. He also believes that visitors will not hesitate to pay this extra fee as "this additional cost is to promote a better quality market hence visitors will be more benefited". This fund was created not to address the negative financial impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on Thailand tourism, but to focus on the long-term growth of the industry, said Supasorn.
