Russian Market

The best way to learn about a place is to visit its market. This saying is very true when mentioning about Psar Loul Tom Pong, also known as the Russian Market in the center of Phnom Penh. This is a wonderful place is where you can simply wander around for sightseeing, enjoy the colorful and hustle atmosphere of an oriental market or look for everything lock, stock, and barrel. The popular name Russian Market came from the facts that, during the 1980s, most of the goods here came from Russia and it was very popular among Russian expats in Phnom Penh as Russia was among very few countries that provided aids to Cambodia at that time.

Located at the south of the French Quarter, not far from other interesting sites in the city, a visit to the Russian market can be made during your free time or combined on a Phnom Penh day tour. This place is interesting enough to kill around an hour or more depending on how much you want to browse. It is full of life and really a colorful place. Once inside the market, you will easily get lost among a maze of narrow aisles with colorful shops that offer a huge range of local handicrafts, art souvenirs, antiquities, silks, jewelry, local foods and fresh produce, bags, shoes, book, maps, discounted clothing from different brands and sources, and so on.

There are also quite a few coffee shops and restaurants in and around the market. It is nice to sit down and enjoy your café au lait while watching people busy buying and bargaining.

The market opens daily from 7.00 AM to 5.00 PM and up to 11.00 PM for souvenir shops. It is best to visit the place in the afternoon after your sightseeing tour of other sites in the city. Visiting this market is a kind of refreshing activity after your day of temple-hopping and should not be missed when you are in Phnom Penh.
