Shwezigon Pagoda

Considered the original of Shwedagon in Yagon, Shwezigon Pagoda is the oldest temple in Bagan built by the founder of the Bagan kingdom - King Anawrahta started construction in 1059 and completed at the end of the 11th century under King Kyansittha.

Shwezigon Pagoda is located in the area of Nyaung U and Wetkyi-In, in the center of a large area surrounded by many temples. At the first minute to the temple gate, visitors will be overwhelmed with the mythical lion statue guarding the temple along with a 230m long wall separating it from the outside world.

The most prominent is the gilded bell tower, below are 4 golden lions blocking at four corners. Shwezigon Pagoda has less gold and diamonds inlaid on it than Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, but Shwezgion Pagoda has its own peaceful beauty. This is also a beautiful place to watch the sunset in Bagan.
