Banteay Kdei

Located around 10 kilometers from Siem Reap, Banteay Kdei is a beautiful Buddhist temple belonging to the Angkor Archaeological Park. Until now, there is no exact record of why this mysterious construction was built or by whom because no evidence related to that information has ever been found.

Banteay Kdei when translated into English means “A Citadels of Chambers”. According to Cambodian history, Banteay Kdei was set up during the sovereignty of King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century. It became the only Buddhist religious site at that time, as the others were Hindu. The king dedicated Banteay Kdei to God Lokevsara following the style of Preah Khan and Ta Prohm, but less complicated. The architecture of the peaceful temple with four entrances consists of two display rooms, central towers, and a monastery. Many of the temples constructed during the reign of King Jayavarman VII were demolished in the 13th century. However, fortunately, some of them are still in extremely good condition.

Banteay Kdei was once a monastery, so it obviously reflects the spiritual importance. However, nowadays, tourists can only see the ruins, as well as the surrounding serenity, the remnants of the site, which will tell the legends of its glorious past. Fewer tourists visiting Banteay Kdei means it is easier to take some beautiful photos of the temple and feel its soul in the tranquil atmosphere. After exploring the site, you might also want to enjoy the impressive scenery when the sun goes down over the lovey man-made reservoir at Srah Srang.

Banteay Kdei is situated just a short distance from the two well-known sites Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm. The easiest way to reach the temple is by getting a private car which enables you to combine visiting other nearby attractions in a day.
