Kampong Tralach

Located in the district of Kampong Tralach (Kampong Chhnang province) in central Cambodia, Kampong Tralach is a Mekong river cruise port and small town sharing the border with Kandal province (in the south) and Kampong Cham province (in the east). It is about 50 kilometers from Phnom Penh and 300 kilometers from Siem Reap.

Kampong Tralach played an important part in Cambodian history. The former capital Lovek was once the country’s principal city after the Angkor devastation of King Borommaracha II in 1431. The new capital was established on the Tonle Sap river’s banks and chosen to be safer than Angkor. Later, the city became a popular and potential trading center which attracted many European traders during the period of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The most famous attraction of Kampong Tralach is the Wat Kampong Leu Vihara, the Buddhist monastery, dated back to the last century. Settled among the rice field, it is a bit isolated and lesser-visited than other conveniently located sites. However, you will feel the peaceful atmosphere and be amazed by its charming beauty. After visiting the only existing construction of Vihara, you can take time to explore the Kampong Tralach village where you admire the delightful streets and enjoy wandering through some impressive rice paddies.

Climate, the best time to visit
