Phnom Penh Central Market

Phsar Thom Thmey, the central market and a prominent landmark of Phnom Penh was built by the French in the late 1930s and once considered the largest market in Asia. This outstanding colonial architecture, full of life market is one of the must-see places for travelers when visiting Phnom Penh.
 
Originally built on marshland, the feature of the market is a 26m high dorm with a diameter of 45 meters that has four arms of three-story buildings branching out diagonally like a cross. The whole building is painted in bright yellow making it prominent amongst the surroundings. The building was designed by French architect Jean Desbois and constructed under the supervision of Louis Chauchon, another French architect who made his name famous with several architectural works throughout Indochina at that time.
Inside the market is numerous shops and stalls that offer all kind of stuff from clothes, electronic goods, and stationery to handicrafts of wood, bronze, jewelry of silver and gold curios. There are also many food stalls with local delicacies and common foods, flowers of all kinds, local fresh produce, coffee, and dinks.
