Tmatboey Bird Sanctuary

Located within the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary, Tmartboey is a leading bird sanctuary in the Northern Plains (around 200 kilometers from Siem Reap). The site is well known for its unique community ecotourism style which is a great combination of bird watching, community improvement, and conservation.

The main terrain of Tmatboey consists of grasslands, woodlands, forests, and waterfalls forming great support for threatened mammal species and birds. Tmatboey is one of the most important sites for the two extremely endangered Ibis species including the Giant Ibis and the White-shouldered Ibis. Other target birds at this sanctuary are Black-headed Woodpecker, Chinese Francolin, Pale-capped Pigeon, Rufous-bellied Eagle, etc. The Cambodian government, the Ministry of Environment, NGOs conservation, and the community of Tmatboey village established the conservation project in the area. Thanks to the funding, the number of birds is steadily increasing.

A popular trip discovering Tmatboey often includes an overnight stay at the ecolodge run by the Tmatboey community that ensures you will have enough time to explore the area as well as see numerous bird species. Spending a full day for birdwatching activity in the Deciduous Dipterocarp forest, you even need to stay late with a torch to do the nighttime trekking in search of the Large-tailed Nightjar, Barn Owl, Franklin’s Nightjar, and Oriental Scops Owl.

You can reach Tmatboey bird sanctuary by a private car from Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and via the newly built bridge near Stung Treng from Kratie.

Climate, the best time to visit

Owning special terrains, Tmatboey’s weather is cool all year round with the coolest temperature of around 23°C during nighttime and in the early morning. The best time to visit the site is months lasting from January to April. The White-shouldered Ibis can be seen unexpectedly throughout the year.
