Virachey National Park

Located between Ratanakiri and Stung Treng provinces, Virachey National Park covering a total area of 3325 square kilometers is the largest national park in Cambodia and is one of the two ASEAN Heritage Parks. The park is rich in an ecosystem consisting of valleys, rainforests, marshlands, rivers, and wildlife.

Luckily, Virachey National Park is mainly untouched and unexplored by people. The park is home to numerous species of animals and plants. Hill tribe villages are dotted in remote areas around the edge of the park. A part of the Ho Chi Minh trail runs across the border of the site to the east. Virachey offers a great insight into Cambodia’s beautiful nature and wilderness.

Traveling to Virachey National Park, tourists can participate in multiday trekking tours with a tour guide including an overnight camping experience. The popular excursions with different trekking durations, distances, and difficulties in the area include the Kalang Chhouy Sacred Moutain (2 days 1 night or 3 days 2 nights), O'Lapeung (3 days 2 nights or 4 days 3 nights), and Phnom Veal Thom wilderness (7 days 6 nights or 8 days 7 nights). You do not need the trekking experience before coming here but fitness is a must. Additionally, tourists can register the wildlife tours to spot leopards, monkeys, elephants… At a reasonable certainty, you can see endangered species like hornbills, ibis, gibbons, and other wild birds.

It is very easy to reach Virachey National Park by private car from Phnom Penh (380 km), Siem Reap (355 km), and Bunlung (50 km). From big cities, tourists can take the flight to Pakse airport (153 km from Virachey) before getting to the site by road transfer.

Climate, the best time to visit

The weather at Virachey National Park is hot and humid all around the year. In summer, it often rains heavily. The best time to explore the park is the months between November to February when the weather is excellent for outdoor activities, especially camping and trekking
