Independence Monument

Independence Monument (also known as Vimean Ekareach in the Khmer language), a reddish-brown stone Angkorian-style tower in the shape of a beautiful lotus blooming, is one of the most remarkable attractions located in the center of Phnom Penh.

The 20-meter-tall monument, built in 1958, was designed by a Cambodian architecture Vann Molyvann who also made plans for the Olympic Stadium and other constructions in the capital city. It has 5 floors and each floor is decorated with multi-headed snakes. The site serves as a remembrance to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Cambodia and to mark the independence of the country from the French’s ruling for almost a century.

Independence Monument, charming for its tranquil and cool atmosphere which makes it a much prominent and unique destination, attracts lots of tourists coming to visit every day. It is not allowed to walk in the monument but you still can enjoy its wonderful view from across the street.

Independence Monument is right at the heart of Phnom Penh which is conveniently visited by a private car and combined with other nearby interesting sights of the city such as the Wat Phnom, Royal Palace, National Museum, Tuol Sleng, and Russia Market.

Climate, the best time to visit

Phnom Penh has a tropical climate that is hot and humid all year round. The dry season is from November to April and the wet season covers the remaining months of the year. You can visit the Independence Monument any time in the year. However, the most popular and comfortable time is during the dry season. The monument is at its best impression in the late afternoon and at nighttime when it is illuminated by colorful lights forming the meaningful national flag.

Festivals and holidays

Independence Monument is an important place for activities on special annual occasions including National Independence Day (7 January) and Constitutional Day (24 September).
