Tham Kong Lo

Tham Kong Lo, also known as Kong Lor Cave, is a large limestone cave lying deep in Phu Hin Bun National Park (Khammouane Province, around 130 km from Thakhek and 310 kilometers from Vientiane). Being the biggest cave in Southeast Asia and among the list of the largest cave in the world, this unique geological wonder with its untouched beauty is a hidden gem of Laos.

Tham Kong Lo lasts for 7.5 kilometers and it was formed by the river that runs the entire cave‘s length. The ceiling reaches the height of 100 meters at some places making it extremely spacious. To discover the cave, you can board a long-tail boat starting from the village of Ban Kong Lo, or for a more adventurous experience, paddling a kayak is also a good choice. The traditional boat makes some optional stops depending on the level of water, which allows you to explore the cave on foot in the darkness with a flashlight. The natural emerald green lights inside the cave are impressive scenery that leaves you speechless. The natural landscapes surrounding the river are spectacular with breathtaking karst mountains and lush green trees standing on cliffs.

For good preparation before visiting Tham Kong Lo, you should go with an experienced local guide, wear life jackets, and bring a flashlight or a torch, which help you to have a better view. A turquoise lake is a holy place of the people in the area, as they believe it is God’s skin.

Vientiane is the nearest big city to Tham Kong Lo and it is comfortable to use a private car to reach the boat station in Kong Lo village. Another option is driving from Vientiane to Thakhek and experience the Thakhek loop covering the caves and waterfalls along the way.

Climate, the best time to visit

The best time to visit Kong Lo is the dry season lasting from November to April. The sooner you come here in the dry season, the higher the water level within the cave is. In the wet season, the flood can lead to extremely dangerous situations.
