Muang Xay

Located in the Nam Ko River Basin in the northern region of Laos (around 116 km from Luang Namtha and 193 km from Luang Prabang), Muang Xay is the capital of the Oudomxay province and is surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges. If you have the chance to travel to Muang Xay, you will realize there are very few destinations on earth that are picturesque and interesting to see like this wonderful city.

Muang Xay is a mountainous region lying among lush green forests with 2 large rising hills on the opposite sides. Thanks to the special location and the terrains, the city is well protected from the bad effects of the monsoon. Muang Xay is home to numerous attractive sites that tourists can pay a visit to such as the Oudomxay museum, Phuuthat stupa, Ban Chom Ong village of the Khmu ethnic people, Ban Nam Heeng village, Chom Ong cave, and Nam Kad waterfalls.

Besides spending time at famous religious and natural spots, you can experience some very fantastic hiking including an overnight stay with a local family in the village. If you want to try local cuisine, do not hesitate to explore any food markets in the regions including Nonmendga market, Tin market, Phoukhaiw market, or get to one of the steamboat restaurants in the area. Other activities that you can do while in Muang Xay are trying the baked goods, wandering at the Chinese market, buy souvenirs for your family at the Thai Ly Handicraft shop, taking an adventurous cycling trip, and relax with the traditional herbal massage after a long outing day.

The Oudomxay airport in Muang Xay serves only flights from Vientiane with the frequency of three times per week. From Luang Namtha, Nong Khiaw, and Luang Prabang, it is very easy and convenient to reach Muang Xay by private car.

Muang Xay has the typical tropical climate with the driest months lasting from December to February. The average temperature ranges from 27°C to 35°C and it varies a lot during the year due to its high elevation. The best time to visit the city lasts for 5 months between October and February.
