Can Tho

Located on the central Mekong River Delta on the bank of Hau River - one of two currents of Mekong River in Vietnam, Can Tho is the largest city in Delta and is the 4th most populous city in Vietnam with population of about some 1.2 million. Referred to as ‘Country’s Western Capital’, Can Tho is the political, economic, cultural center of the area and is the most popular delta destination amongst travelers.

Every morning, hundreds of large boat anchors along with their selling product hung on top of the pole at the end of the boat. This helps buyers to know what the boat sells. There are also many “service boats” that provide food stuff, coffee, gas and so on. Markets open almost full day everyday but the peak usually from five and ten o'clock in the morning. During rush hour, hundreds of boats laden with goods wriggle on the river. The voice of sellers and buyers, someone calling each other or laugh, the sound of motors… all make the scenery and atmosphere vibrant and exciting.

Another highlight of Can Tho is visit to eco-tourist areas, fruit gardens and home stay. Tourists walking in the garden breathe the cool fresh air and taste the ripe fruit freshly picked from trees. There are also cultural and historical visiting sites such as temples and pagodas with special characters of the Mekong delta.

The weather in Can Tho is hot and humid, quite comfortable with little rain and storm and no cold seasons all year round. The rainy season in Can Tho lasts from May to November and the dry season is from December to April next year. Can Tho has an average temperature of about 27 degrees Celsius. Especially around the full moon of December and the full moon in April, there are 2 big festivals in Binh Thuy communal house held in Can Tho (Thuong Dien and Ha Dien). Besides, if visitors are interested in the culture of the Khmer, you can come here at Cholchonam Thomay (New Year's Eve) during the three days of March 13, 14, 15, lunar calendar, Okombok water-giving ceremony (Moon worshiping ceremony) in the lunar October and the worship of Grandparents (Dolta) in the 8th lunar month.

It takes only about 170 km from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho, the road is also very convenient so you can use many different means to get there. If you are coming from Hanoi and the Northern provinces, you should take a plane to Ho Chi Minh City or fly directly to Can Tho, which is more convenient to travel and does not take too much time. Private car or van is the common way to visit Can Tho from Ho Chi Minh City. Travel time from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho is about 3.5 hours to 4 hours.
